10 Rock Songs That Were Written As A Joke
6. Back to School - Deftones
For as much rancor has been thrown towards nu metal, Deftones were always one of the few shining lights in the scene. While albums like Saturday Night Wrist have left a bad taste in the group's mouth in retrospect, there was never anything that would make modern listeners cringe at the thought of it. That is, if you don't count Back to School.
Being the leadoff track on most editions of White Pony, this is one of the most nu metal tracks Deftones would ever release, with a backing track almost purposefully meant to be super edgy. Then again, that's because it is. When Chino Moreno originally played the final mixes of White Pony for his record execs, he was told to go back and work on it some more since they didn't have a song with single material. Since the album was meant to be taken as a whole rather than be a commercial pop record, Chino went home and rewrote the final song Pink Maggit as a joke to prove to his superiors how simple it was to write a pop song.
That ended up biting him in the ass though when the record execs didn't get it and then released the song without consulting the rest of the band. For as much as people may remember this as one of Deftones' biggest hits, this Limp Bizkit-fied version of the group is something that probably should just be remembered as a bad joke and nothing else.
