10 Rock Songs That Were Written For Somebody Else
8. Better Man - Pearl Jam
Eddie Vedder has spoken time and time again about how he never really expected to get as famous as he became in the '90s. You can be slogging away at your guitar in your room dreaming of one day being in front of a crowd of thousands singing your songs, but chances are that it might not happen at all. Once those dreams all came true for Eddie though, he ended up getting more standoffish about the poppier side of his music.
Before he had even joined Pearl Jam, Better Man had been a core part of Eddie's songwriting, playing it with his older band Bad Radio and keeping it on the backburner for the majority of the sessions for Ten. When they went through the roof off the back of Jeremy and Alive though, you could tell that Eddie wanted to bury this song, including one instance where producer Brendan O'Brien asked him to use it for the Vs. sessions and all the air being sucked out of the room almost immediately.
Vedder even considered ditching the song entirely, electing to give it away to ex-Pretender Chrissie Hynde to use for a charity record. Things were getting weirder by the minute though, and since Vitalogy already had enough experiments to go around, they figured they throw this one in the mix just to see what happens. You may have to sit through Bugs to get to it, but then you land on one of the greatest singalongs in grunge rock.
