10 Rock Songs That Were Written For Somebody Else

4. Girlfriend - Paul McCartney

There have been countless fans of classic rock that have entire tastes that fit into the yacht rock mold. From Steely Dan to Rupert Holmes, you can immediately picture the Hawaiian shirts and shades that these guys have on before you even see pictures from around the time it was made. Even if he wasn't on brand on the musical side, Paul McCartney seemed to one up them on London Town by recording half the album on an actual yacht.

Taking to the high seas to make Wings' poppiest album, McCartney had already been thinking of giving some of these songs away, with Girlfriend being intended for the Michael Jackson album Off the Wall. Though the King of Pop did end up making his own version of the song alongside tracks like Rock With You and Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, McCartney's version of the tune is like night and day, as he adopts the kind of falsetto that would have fit in with Jacko's natural voice.

With the glitzy production though, Macca's version of a Michael Jackson song flirts with a lot more disco this time around, especially on the chorus of "YEAH" where the entire band practically sound like the Bee Gees. After the rest of the band split, this is the kind of pop music that feels authentically McCartney, abandoning the arena rock side of his sound for something a little more sugary than usual. Wings may have been reduced to just three people at this point, but there was still some interesting stuff happening here.
