10 Rock Songs Too Weird To Get Big

3. Alabama Song - The Doors

Even at the height of psychedelia, the Doors had set a bit of a higher standard when it comes to weird music. Despite Jim Morrison becoming the rock god that we all fawn over today, it's not like songs like Light My Fire and The Crystal Ship were the most radio-friendly songs out there during the Summer of Love. Little did we know that that was only the beginning of the group's experimentation.

When combing through their collection of records, pianist Ray Manzarak had turned the rest of the band onto an opera that he had in his collection featuring the song Alabama Song. Featuring a distinct German oompah, Morrison got excited when first hearing it, insisting that the group work up their own version of the tune. Interpolating their own chord changes on top of everything, the entire feels like some demented rock and roll waltz, as the various harpsichord accentuations swirl around your head.

Though the subject matter of wanting to return to the bar is nothing new in terms of rock and roll, the actual sound of this record is a lot more in tune with classical music than something like Break on Through. As far as psychedelia goes, this is the kind of stuff that you hear when the warped acid really starts to kick in.
