10 Rock Songs With Horrible Backstories
9. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Let's get one thing out of the way here...Radiohead was never known to be the most happy go lucky band in the first place. Throughout most of the Bends, half of the appeal of the songs was how you found a musical friend in Thom Yorke to be down and depressed with. When they decided to ascend to the level of rock gods on OK Computer though, that kind of sadness became pretty alarming.
Before even starting on the idea for Paranoid Android, Yorke first thought of the lyrics after witnessing a fight at a bar when he was in the States. Deciding to get some air, he went into a bar to find these people acting uncivilized, which he likened to them seeming almost inhuman. Once he hit upon the idea for the song though, it almost takes you on that kind of dark journey through a wild night in LA.
For instance, when you realize that one of the people at the bar was some screaming hanger on who demanded to be heard, the phrase "screaming Gucci little piggy" starts to make a lot more sense. This isn't just some account about how everyone in LA is a bit unhinged though. This is what happens when you put someone into the City of Angels and watch them slowly lose their mind.
