10 Rock Songs With Horrible Backstories

8. Today - Smashing Pumpkins

By the time that the mid 90s came around, the alternative rock scene seemed to be hitting a sort of slump. Even though it was one of the biggest genres of all time at that point, it was becoming apparent that many of us weren't sure what this music was "alternative" to anymore. When you look at the lyrics to the Smashing Pumpkins material, Today isn't something that you hear every day on the radio.

Looking to create a bright and sunshine-y song, Billy Corgan originally had the idea for this song after listening to '60s bands like the Lovin Spoonful at home. If you listen to what he's actually saying though, it's probably for the best that the music in the song is actually cheery. Yeah, what ties this whole song together is suicide, with Billy talking about wanting to tear his heart out and wondering if he even has time to see tomorrow.

I repeat, this is a song that was supposed to be a singalong classic with lyrics that revolve around a man having an existential crisis. It's not like the song really has a clear conclusion either, given that the narrator keeps droning on about how today is the greatest. He might just be trying to be optimistic, but considering all that you've gone through today, was it really all that great?
