10 Rock Songs With Really Disturbing Endings
1. Hurt - Nine Inch Nails
When you get to the end of The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails, you really need to hear a song like Hurt. Acting as a bit of a comedown from the rest of the record, you get to see the main character really finding some sort of peace with himself and trying to turn his life around. That means he has a chance to redeem himself, right? Wrong.
Throughout most of this record, we see Mr. Self Destruct make one harmful decision after another, from turning to sexual dominance on Closer to eventually contemplating suicide on the title track that comes right before this song. As much as you hear this man's cry for help at this point, it's too late, with the last track being the culmination of the most disturbing parts of the record, as he puts a gun to his head and pulls the trigger.
It's not like Trent didn't know what he was doing with this song either, comparing this track to just a slight slice of beauty that he found in the rubble after all of the chaos that he stirred up on the rest of the record. In that respect, you're not really hearing Mr. Self Destruct starting to turn himself around at all. If anything, this is the final thoughts as he bleeds out and wonders what he could have done differently if he were given a second chance. You can always dwell on the what if's in these situations, by after everything he's done to himself on this record, there's no road back home to be found.
