Tom Petty's entire catalog seems to be indebted to the American Dream. As much as people like to call him out for having some middle of the road music every now and again, the core message behind his music is regular people looking to dream of something better beyond their nowhere towns. Then again, Tom knows the world he lives in, and he's not afraid to say that that attitude comes with a price.
Although Hard Promises was constructed as a bit of a darker record than the rest of his output, Something Big almost feels like it doesn't belong in rock at all. After the guitar break lets us take a minute to breathe, we come back to our heroes being gutted and killed in their motel room, with the forensics team not even giving a second glance as to what happened. They may have been trying to make a name for themselves, but there's always a catch when you dance a little too close to the fire like this.
