10 Rock Songs With Really Disturbing Endings
5. Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
A handful of the happiest songs in the rock pantheon have been written by Paul McCartney. Although the Beatles always had the mantra that all you need is love, Macca was always the good time spirit of the band, even when John Lennon was determined to speak the truth in his songs. Paul is known to lift people's spirits though, so it was definitely a change up seeing what Eleanor Rigby had to offer.
With no real guitars or drums to speak of, the entire track is carried by the Beatles' voices and a string section, with Paul telling the story of a title character living a lonely life, picking up rice after a wedding while never getting the kind of happy lifestyle she watches every day. Elsewhere in the story, we also have Father McKenzie, who preaches from his pulpit everyday to a congregation that doesn't even care about him.
Like most Paul ballads, you're expecting things to turn around for these two, but it never comes. As the last verse comes in, we see Eleanor passing away in the church one day and Father McKenzie overseeing her funeral with no mourners to speak of. With no legacy to uphold, the preacher just wipes his hand of her memory, walking away without a care in the world. While loneliness might be a common feeling for all of us, this is what happens when you let that feeling completely consume you.
