10 Rock Songs With Really Disturbing Endings
4. Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen
The entire mission statement behind Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run was about wanting to break out of the slums and build a new life for yourself. If anything, you could argue that the Boss was writing the life story of a bunch of his friends back in Jersey, living a 9-5 existence and dreaming of something a little bit more exciting beyond the city limits. Though it looks like they'll finally escape at the end of the album, life sometimes makes other plans.
At 9 minutes, Jungleland is the true epic of Springsteen's masterpiece, showing all of the rebels out on the streets at night trying to make their way out of town. There's a sense of wonder and even danger in the air, with the rock and rollers flashing their guitars like switchblades before giving way to Clarence Clemons' single greatest saxophone solo of his career.
Once the dust settles though, we find our main characters at the moment of truth, where they have the opportunity to leave their old lives behind, only to come up empty and end up wounded on the street. If anything, this is an even less romantic send off than they had hoped for, having to tend to their wounds in town for the rest of their lives. Going out in a blaze of glory would have at least been heroic, but all we get is the cold reality of never being able to run away from home.
