10 Rock Songs With Weird Instruments

6. Bugs - Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam is a band whose influences can be felt through every riff they write. Upon listening to any of the band's records, one can pick up hints of the great hard rock of the 70's that have had an impact on the band's musical upbringing. While bands like Led Zeppelin and the Who are plausible inspirations for the band, the name Weird Al Yankovic certainly doesn't spring to mind.

In an effort to shift away from their usual sound, Eddie Vedder went into Vitalogy looking to defy the audience's expectations. When composing a song about a lonely man confronting bugs in his apartment, Vedder deliberately tried to challenge himself and wrote the melody on an old accordion that he had acquired at a junk shop.

While the other songs on the record certainly sounded like a different stripe of Pearl Jam, this song was a caustic left turn for the band that showcased Vedder's more unwieldy artistic side. Determined to keep the audience guessing, Vedder insisted on keeping the song on the record rather than go with one of the band's more commercial offerings. In terms of the more outlandish sides of Pearl Jam's catalog, "Bugs" is about as experimental as it gets.
