10 Rock Songs With Weird Instruments
7. Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
There's no disputing that "Whole Lotta Love" features one of the most essential riffs in hard rock music. From the stomping rhythm to the note interplay, the guitar drives the song with a force that embodies 70's rock sleaze. Upon listening to the album version, many fans were initially perplexed with the entire middle section of ambience.
What unfolded in the studio during this time was Jimmy Page playing a theremin, which manipulates sound based on hand motion. Instead of just squeezing as much out of the guitar riff as he could, Page took the opportunity to showcase more avant garde sounds. With nothing else present exception John Bonham's steady time-keeping, the track goes from being a great hard rock scorcher to a slow descent into the depths of Hell within just a few seconds.
Once everything was recorded, Page and engineer Eddie Kramer went absolutely haywire, as they began to add layers of echo onto the tracks to give the breakdown an ethereal vibe. As the blues scene was still in full swing, Led Zeppelin proved themselves to be ahead of their contemporaries by bringing more unorthodox soundscapes to their unique brand of hard rock.
