10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars
9. Kathleen Hanna - Letterbomb
With American Idiot, Green Day had a second wind for their career by bringing pop punk to the grand stage. Flowing like a traditional rock opera like Tommy or the Wall, the album tells a story of Jesus of Suburbia and his trials and tribulations with his old flame Whatsername. While Billie Joe Armstrong does a great job at providing the voice for Jesus, it's only fair that an equally strong punk presence provide the female counterpoint.
Coming at the midway point of the record, "Letterbomb" is the time when all bets are off and Whatsername lashes out at Jesus' childishness. To start off the entire track, we get what sounds like an answering machine message of Whatsername mocking him over the phone, but the vocals don't come from any of the band members. Calling back to the band's 90's roots, the vocals on this little snippet are performed by Kathleen Hanna, known for her key role in riot grrrl act Bikini Kill as well as giving Kurt Cobain inspiration to write "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Given her pedigree as a punk feminist icon, it's fitting that her voice be the opening of the cut meant to put every narcissistic misfit in his place.
