10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars

8. Peter Buck - I Will Dare

When you look at the alternative scene of the early 80's, the competition didn't seem to be as stiff as it was in the following decade. These bands were typically subjected to indie labels and were just happy to get what airplay they could playing their own unique take on rock. That being said, there were still a few rivals in the scene from time to time.

While there were many ongoing feuds between The Smiths and The Cure, something different was happening on the college rock circuit of America. Though R.E.M. were looked at as kings of the counterculture, the Replacements were coming from Minneapolis trying to lay claim to this more rootsy brand of rock music. The band's sights may have been to outshine R.E.M, but that didn't mean they had lost respect for them when it came to cut their own tunes.

On the band's first major breakthrough album Let It Be, the guitar solo on the opening track "I Will Dare" was actually contributed by Peter Buck, whose tone is almost unmistakable once put into the band's more raucous context. The Replacements may not have attained as high a status as R.E.M., but at the time, they were all brothers in arms looking to change the music world one song at a time.
