10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars
5. Krist Novoselic - I Should Have Known
As the Foo Fighters made their way into the 2010's, Dave Grohl was starting to strip things back a bit. After creating some grandiose works on previous albums like In Your Honor and Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace, Grohl's next course of action was to move into his garage for the band's next album Wasting Light.
Calling back to his roots in the 90's, Grohl wanted everything old school, down to the record being cut on analog tape rather than to a computer grid, and even tapped alt-rock superproducer Butch Vig to oversee production. With guest stars like Husker Du's Bob Mould joining in, Grohl thought it was time to bring in an old friend from a past life.
On the album's more reflective track "I Should Have Known," the bass tone is being provided by Krist Novoselic from Nirvana, which was one of the first times the two had performed together since Kurt Cobain's death. While the Foos had been known for their straight-ahead guitar attack, some of the six-strings take a back seat to the bass, which has some of the most feral sounds on the entire record. This could have been a fine ballad on its own, but the addition of Novoselic makes the song feel like it has one foot trailing back into the classic 90's sound Grohl helped invent.
