10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars

6. Tom Araya - Iron Gland

Alice in Chains' 1992 masterpiece Dirt is an absolute must-hear for anyone who considers themselves a fan of heavy music. The sludge and doom behind the instrumentation along with the disquieting lyrics about drug abuse give the listener the feeling of being trapped six feet underground. Each track is a banger from front to back, but the 1-minute blast "Iron Gland" is what really fills you to the brim with dread.

Originating from a riff that Jerry Cantrell was fooling around with, the band decided to include it on the record just to shut Cantrell up. On its own, the guitar was a great way to set up ambience, but the real gut-punch came when the vocals were added.

Needing a more forceful delivery than Layne Staley, the screams heard throughout this track are courtesy of Tom Araya from Slayer, whom the band had become friendly after sharing the stage with them as an opening act. Compared to the way Cantrell and Staley harmonize on the band's tracks, this kind of ominous performance is a welcome change of pace from their usual formula. The track itself might not be as substantial as something like "Rooster" or "Them Bones," but it does its job by pushing you forward into the sonic depths of Hell.
