10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars
3. Stevie Nicks - Insider
Once the 80's came into view, Stevie Nicks was getting restless in Fleetwood Mac. When she went out of the confines of her bandmates, she called up Tom Petty to ask him if he would write her a song. While Petty did oblige to Nicks' request, the details got a little muddied.
"Insider," which was originally the song Petty wrote for Nicks, ended up being so personal that Petty liked the song too much to let it go. While Nicks understood, you can still hear her cutting through the mix as the backing vocalist on the track. Instead of winding up on Nicks' record, the song became a real standout on the Heartbreakers' album Hard Promises.
Determined not to leave Nicks hanging, Petty ended up contributing "Stop Draggin My Heart Around," which became one of the biggest hits of Nicks' career. These two songs blossomed into a musical friendship between Petty and Nicks that lasted for decades, with Nicks showing up occasionally to perform both songs with Petty in concert. "Insider" might not have necessarily been the song Petty intended, but what it became was much bigger than anything Petty or Nicks could have ever imagined.
