10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers
5. Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Nirvana
There's always a bit of bittersweet beauty that comes with watching Nirvana's Unplugged performance. Taped just a few months before Kurt Cobain would eventually die by his own hand, the downtempo songs and lush flowers makes you feel like you're watching a man play at his own funeral. Though there were some great covers from the likes of David Bowie and the Meat Puppets throughout the night, Where Did You Sleep Last Night should be synonymous with Cobain at this point.
Before the song even starts, Cobain goes on a little aside talking about the original singer Lead Belly, who was known as one of the more high-profile bluesmen in his time. While Nirvana has well since past the blues at this point, Cobain reaches deep into the back of his throat to bring one of the most gutteral performances he has ever made, as he seems to let out all of his pain on the crowd.
Aside from just the incredible guitar playing and singing, the best moment comes towards the very end, where the camera seems to capture Kurt's creative ingenuity coming through in his eyes, as he summons the strength to get through the final screams. For as much as people would like to say that Kurt Cobain wasn't that good a musician, this is the clip that shows just how much of a powerhouse he really was.
