10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers

4. Better By You Better Than Me - Judas Priest

It's always nice when you're able to really hit it out of the park with a cover song. For as much as you may have loved the original version, it's any artists' dream to make your own version of the track that's good enough to rival the one you fell in love with. In Judas Priest's case though, Better By You Better Than Me might be known for a more notorious reason.

Being originally a song by the hard rock act Spooky Tooth, Judas Priest's version was a welcome inclusion on the album Stained Class, with Rob Halford summoning up his trademark low-ending growls. As time went on though, this song would play a role in Priest's career when being charged with the death of two of their fans. With both of them attempting suicide, law enforcement started to call attention to what they considered to be subliminal messages in Priest's version of the tune, claiming that it encouraged these fans to kill themselves.

Getting off more or less free, Priest was found not guilty of planting any messages, instead just responsible for making one hell of a rock song that would become the foundation of metal. Though the outcome of this was certainly tragic, when it came to metal's notoriety in the public eye, this is about as high profile as you can get.
