10 Rock Stars That Hated Being Rock Stars

6. Bob Dylan

There's no one on this Earth who could possibly deal with being known as the Voice of a Generation. You can only bring your own perspective to your art, so how is that going to work when you're supposed to be speaking for everyone in your demographic? It's never an easy thing to balance, so Bob Dylan didn't even try most of the time.

If you want a good look at Dylan's disdain for the press, just look at any of the press tours that he did around the height of his fame. Whenever interviewers ask a question, Dylan is known to be very stoic, either only giving one word answers or being a smart ass and not giving a straight response. While Dylan looked at his lyrics as poetry, that kind of relationship did turn up in his songs as well, like the character Mr. Jones on Ballad of a Thin Man being a euphemism for the people who like to pick apart everything that he says.

Even when critics tried to analyze everything he did, Dylan would intentionally make wild turns in his discography, like the sloppy and misguided album Self Portrait, where he tried to shake off the persona that he could do no wrong. As much as we might like listening to it, Dylan isn't dancing to anyone else's tune but his own and could care less whether he's a rock star or not.
