10 Rock Stars That Hated Being Rock Stars
2. Thom Yorke - Radiohead
When you look at the career trajectory of Radiohead, it would have been totally fine with Thom Yorke if Creep had been the only hit they ever had. Since their sad brand of rock and roll was a lot more introspective than the likes of Green Day, it would be fine for him to have a fairly small audience every now and again rather than the stadium crowds. As the years went on, Radiohead's world got a whole lot bigger, but no less sad in the process.
Once the band started to really pick up steam as the new gods of rock in the wake of OK Computer, Thom started to feel more isolated than ever, feeling like he was being confined to the road and the studio most of the time. There were even a handful of times where he tried to escape the rock and roll life altogether, including once where he left after a soundcheck only to find himself getting on a train that was crammed with Radiohead fans going to see his show.
Thom did find some stability over the years though, choosing to have more control over the kind of music that he makes, whether that's going down the electronic rabbit hole on Kid A or the kind of glitchy production that we got to hear on the King of Limbs. While the star power of Radiohead hasn't faded in the slightest, the way they interact with the press is a lot more limited. At this point, nothing is off the table as long as it comes together the way Radiohead would do it.
