10 Rock Stars Who Absolutely Hated The Music Business

1. Bob Dylan

When Bob Dylan started to woodshed his first songs, no one was really expecting him to become the voice of his generation or anything. This was just a humble folk singer in the vein of Woody Guthrie, who's lyrics ended up getting dissected by the counterculture, with everyone trying to make their own conclusions about what he was getting at in some of his songs. If you had asked Dylan himself though, chances are that even he probably wouldn't tell you what these songs were about.

Much like the humble folk singers that came before him, Bob did everything he could to minimize his effect on the world, always being a bit cagey in interviews and never exactly saying what his songs were about. By keeping that low profile though, the press were only more intrigued, picking apart every single syllable that fell out of his mouth to get to the bottom of something like Like a Rolling Stone or Ballad of a Thin Man. The whole Dylan myth seemed to get so big that Dylan even tried to shake it off, making wild left turns like Self Portrait to air his more vulnerable side.

If you look at Dylan just for his words on the page though, you're missing the point. It's all about the person who sings the song at the end of the day, bringing their own personal experience into the mix and channeling their own life into those lyrics. Bob isn't looking to be fawned over like some modern day Shakespeare. He's still woodshedding all the time, hoping that he has at least one more good song left in him.
