10 Rock Stars Who Never Wanted To Be Famous
2. Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam were never supposed to be major rock stars. Although the group's original incarnation as Mother Love Bone gave them a virtual superstar in Andy Wood, the more introverted nature of Eddie Vedder seemed to be for a more niche audience than the arena rock they were once known for. Once grunge became the order of the day though, these regular guys turned into one of the biggest bands in the world.
Aside from the royalty checks coming in for their debut album Ten, Eddie Vedder was absolutely horrified of the group's overnight success. Instead of the rapid ascent he got, Vedder always wanted to have a slow build as a band, taking the route that R.E.M. and Pink Floyd had done. As a result, most of Pearl Jam's releases afterwards were almost deliberate attempts to avoid the spotlight, with Vedder refusing to make videos and shying away from having too much press while on tour.
Hell, even some of the more off-the-wall experiments on records like Vitalogy and No Code almost feel like an attempt to lose fans on Vedder's part, as he does everything he can not to make songs that are not single-worthy. While Vedder may have settled into his rock stars shoes nowadays, he certainly had a long way to go after running as far away from the limelight as he possibly could.
