10 Rock Stars Who Never Wanted To Be Famous
3. John Frusciante - The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Not many musicians seem to be one with their own muse quite like John Frusciante. Ever since coming on board with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John's way of tearing through melodic solos feels almost like a spiritual exercise, as he tries to get the most out of his instrument that he possibly can. Then again, that kind of intimacy does get a little strange when press start getting involved.
As the Peppers started to blow up after the success of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, you could see Frusciante getting more and more uncomfortable by the minute. Despite finally joining the Peppers, Frusciante never really pictured the group actually getting that huge. Instead, John's vision was more about leading the group in the California underground scene, which was all but shattered when tracks like Under the Bridge and Give It Away started blowing up on the radio.
This ended up really causing a rift between John and the rest of the band, with shows devolving into John staying at one corner of the stage and rarely making eye contact. It also didn't help that Frusciante was starting to experiment with heroin around this time, including an infamous SNL performance and eventually quitting the band right as they were about to go onstage in Japan. Though John's downward spiral was awful to see as a rock fan, his resurrection with Californication and By the Way showed him finally making peace with his introverted demons.
