10 Rockstars That Hate You For Liking Their Music
2. Kurt Cobain - Nirvana
At the start of the alternative movement, Kurt Cobain always felt like a man of many contradictions when in the public eye. If the interviews are any indication, Cobain came off as a standoffish guest who never really understood why people were making such a big deal out of his little band from Seattle. That didn't stop him from running towards his newfound fame like an Olympic sprinter though.
With the release of Nevermind, Cobain seemed to be bad mouthing his own record before it even had time to sink in, calling it one of the most candified versions of a rock record he had ever heard. That kind of disdain seemed to increased tenfold when the audiences multiplied, including the same jocks that would have picked on Cobain in high school. Throughout each success though, Cobain maintained his stance on social reform, going as far as to include a message in the liner notes of Incesticide condemning any of their fans who partook in any bigoted behavior.
It's pretty much all there in the lyrics of Smells Like Teen Spirit too, as Cobain makes it clear that teenagers are looking to find the lowest common denominator of music in order to suit their needs. Cobain may not have wanted to become the voice of his generation, but his dissection of the rock star machine may have been just what we needed at the time.
