Now come on, what could more synonymous with horror than Marilyn Manson? The man had put himself through body contortions, miles of offensive material, and become a full-blown dictator in the minds of his fans. Manson may have had the high ground, but the real darkness came from the man who showed Manson the ropes.
Coming from the industrial world, Trent Reznor blossomed from an incredible producer to an artist in his own right with Nine Inch Nails. Pretty Hate Machine may have set him up nicely, but The Downward Spiral lived up to its title by throwing its listener into the underworld.
Running as a concept album, the songs follow the story of a man named Mr. Self Destruct, who is one of the most evil characters you'll ever come across. With songs spanning sexual encounters, self-harm, and the meaninglessness of life, our protagonist is actively trying to nullify the world that he's living in.
Even as the album comes to a close, our protagonist finds himself riding that spiral to the end, when listeners are greeted to nothing but the blunt force of noise. The Downward Spiral might not be the most pleasant listen from one track to the next, but in terms of capturing a disturbing message, you can't really do much better than this.
