With songs spanning sexual encounters, self-harm, and the meaninglessness of life, our protagonist is actively trying to nullify the world that he's living in.

Even as the album comes to a close, our protagonist finds himself riding that spiral to the end, when listeners are greeted to nothing but the blunt force of noise. The Downward Spiral might not be the most pleasant listen from one track to the next, but in terms of capturing a disturbing message, you can't really do much better than this.
