10 Scariest Albums Ever Made
2. Antichrist Superstar - Marilyn Manson
At the midpoint of the '90s, there weren't nearly as many shock rockers to go around. After grunge stripped everything back down to its essentials and then got morbid with the death of Kurt Cobain, things were trying to go back to sunshine and lollipops whenever it could. Those bands certainly had their place, but all that darkness was just laying the groundwork for rock's first true Antichrist.
Coming from the industrial metal world, Marilyn Manson looked to be the next iteration of Alice Cooper, but his second release Antichrist Superstar blew his predecessor out of the water. As opposed to coating your standard metal tune in dread, these were demented compositions centered around a demon's journey from a worm to one of the most powerful evil beings the world had ever seen.
While there is a narrative concept to the entire record, each song stands on its own as something truly frightening, whether it be the takedown of celebrity culture on "The Beautiful People" to our protagonist laying siege on the land on the title track. Marilyn Manson may have been something different for the metal scene, but after this one record, he had found his calling as one of the most deranged figures ever to grace a stage.
