10 Scariest Tracks In Hard Rock
8. Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground
Coming to fruition in the artsy world of New York City, the Velvet Underground never seemed to fit into a neat box in their 1960's heyday. As listeners took an inventory of the band's back catalog, one song stands out as one of the most insane tales of sexual desire the Flower Generation could offer.
Most of the track is dominated by John Cale's electric viola, which drifts across your eardrums like a seductive snake. On the other end, Lou Reed's guitar acts as an incessant drone, with the strings ringing out at an almost tribal pace along with the drums. Pulling from literature, Reed wrote the basis of "Venus in Furs" around an erotic form of S&M, as he describes whips and leather boots with incredible lust. While the song first feels like a dirty tale from the underground, you slowly realize you have been trapped in a masochistic dungeon, with Reed revelling as your captor.
Reed's vocals are incredibly twisted, as he yearns for you to bleed for him so he may put his heart at ease. With heavy metal just around the corner, The Velvet Underground offered an alternative form of darkness with this ode to lustful violence.
