10 Sellout Albums That Don't Suck

8. Invisible Touch - Genesis

Whenever a band goes through a lead singer change, the fanbase normally splits in two as to who they actually prefer. Even though the new guy may be putting his all into crafting just the right vocal melody to put over the instrumentals, sometimes you're just fighting an uphill battle that you'll never win. Then again, if there's anyone who deserved a second wind, it would be Phil Collins.

Although Invisible Touch does occupy a bit of '80s cheese across its runtime, you can still hear the prog band that Genesis always were nestled between the cracks. Towards the back half of the record, stuff like the Brazilian are fantastic instrumental works that showcase the impressive sonic textures of Tony Banks. Even some of the poppier songs like Tonight Tonight Tonight have that force to them that remind you that these were the same guys who made songs like Watcher of the Skies.

If you insist that this is just a pop record though, it's still absolutely spectacular, with songs like Invisible Touch and Land of Confusion becoming some of the most enduring classics of the late '80s. While the Patrick Batemans of the world might like to talk this album up a bit too much, this is still one hell of jam that doesn't deserve to be put in the realm of neon schmaltz.
