10 Song Collaborations That Happened By Accident
2. Black Sabbath's Prog Tinged Dreams - Sabbra Cadabra
After laying claim to the heavy metal throne on their first few releases, Black Sabbath were itching for a change of scenery by the time they got around to making Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Recording in an abandoned conventry, the band quickly ventured back to the studio environment with some of the most demonic tunes they had ever come up with. The only thing that was missing though was a competent keyboardist.
Though "Sabbra Cadabra" was one of the best tracks the band had come out with, they could never get the keyboard part to sound right no matter how many times Tony Iommi or Geezer Butler played it. After ducking into a pub after a long session, the band ran into Rick Wakeman and asked him to come back with them to the studio to deliver some advice.
After hearing the track once, Wakeman promptly said "You mean like this?," and started to play the keyboard part that eventually transformed to what ended up on the record. Knowing they couldn't top it, the guys insisted that Wakeman stay and record the keyboards so they could finish up the track. It may be a different flavor of Sabbath for some, but this proggier side of the band left an indelible mark on heavy music going forward.
