10 Songs Proven To Make You Happy
4. Mr. Blue Sky - Electric Light Orchestra
When ELO frontman Jeff Lynne set off to write the double album Out of the Blue, things looked pretty bleak when he settled in. Residing in the mountains to write new material, most of the month was dominated by horrible storms, which brought down the mood of every single track. Once the sun came out though, things took a much more optimistic turn.
As opposed to artists trying to illustrate their point, "Mr. Blue Sky" is the one song that actually sounds like its title, with a joyous orchestral crescendo that sounds like the sun hitting your face. From one movement to the next, Lynne is astounding with his instrumental choices, with the song covering every instrument from vocoder to an entire choir of voices to bring everything to a dramatic conclusion on the final chorus.
Even though the song may be a bit of '70s cheese for some, the way the song has been incorporated into different formats in recent years has made it even more endearing. There are probably some people who couldn't tell you one thing about ELO, but just know how great this song is when playing against the backdrop of Groot dancing in the second installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. There's a lot of '70s songs that have eroded over the years, but the amazing tone of "Mr. Blue Sky" has kept it evergreen for years now.
