10 Songs That Are Darker Than You Realize

7. Uncle Salty - Aerosmith

When it comes to breaking down Aerosmith lyrics, 9 times out of ten the song is going to be about sex. Though you'll occasionally get a song about drug use or the stray song about having fun, most of the words coming from the Steven Tyler songbook have been about some kind of carnal reciprocation in one form or another. While Uncle Salty seems to be following that mindset, the character in this one has a much darker background.

Instead of the usual "boys meets girl" framing you would come to expect, Tyler describes this young girl's life as she is seen wasting away in an orphanage, with no one to really look out for her. She's abused by the staff, commissioned to work while she lives there, and has no one to even come to her need if she gets upset. Then again, the song ends with "it's a sunny day outside my window," so it should have a happy ending, right? Wrong.

For as optimistic as that one line is, Tyler never shows us what that new life could be, electing to leave it as a pipedream for our protagonist to think of in her moments of silence. Hell, for all we know, this little girl may still be wasting away in that hellhole of a life to this very day.
