10 Songs That Are Darker Than You Realize
8. Chop Suey - System of a Down
There's probably a good portion of rock fans who know Chop Suey by System of a Down more for the memes than the actual music. Along with being one of the few shining lights of the nu metal scene at the time, most people just decide to focus on the rapid vocal style of Serj Tankian and joke that you can barely here what he's saying. When you actually slow it down though, you may wish that you hadn't heard what he was saying.
Originally titled Suicide, this song is more or less a dissection of how we treat those who pass away before we do. No matter how much we may like to judge people who go down a dark path, they may be just the same as we are only to be plagued with bad luck, captured in the lines about angels deserving to die.
Tankian even goes the extra mile in the final breakdown of the song, quoting biblical verses about how God has forsaken him in his time of need. Those in the know were having none of it though, making System change the initial title of the song and having it eventually removed from radio shortly after 9/11. Even though this is good food for thought, can we go back to when this song's meaning began and ended at "WAKE UP YABADABADABADABADABA?"
