10 Songs That Are Meant To Confuse You

8. Battery - Metallica

In the metal canon, James Hetfield has pretty much carved out his own tunnel in terms of writing badass riffs. Whether it's the simplicity of something like Sad But True or the insane speed of Master of Puppets, every one of the phrases erupting from James Hetfield's guitar has become the blueprint for thousands of other hard rock and metal acts that have followed. But for the love of God, if you're looking to actually learn a lick, don't make Battery your first one.

For the first part of the track, things don't seem too hard to start out, with the opening strains of acoustic guitar setting things up nicely. Once the tempo drops out though, the rapid fire delivery of the riff is a lot more complex when you sit down to play it, as most of the chords switch up and make for inversions that no one else was even thinking of in the mid '80s.

That's before you even get down to the fact that Hetfield actually has to sing over the whole thing too, which is probably the musical equivalent of trying to run a marathon while also reciting back Shakespeare at the exact same time. As much as metal can be treated like a meatheaded genre every now and again, it takes a master's touch to be able to pull something like this off effectively.
