10 Songs That Broke Up Bands

3. Revolution 9 - The Beatles

The Beatles' self-titled White Album is one of the greatest achievements the Fab Four have ever pulled off. After undergoing meditation in India, the band returned to England inspired, with more songs that they knew what to do with. A lot of the band's experiments end up being fantastic, but the inclusion of "Revolution 9" was something that the band (and fans) would have rather forgotten.

Though John Lennon had already made one version of "Revolution" on the flipside to "Hey Jude," this double disc features two versions. While the acoustic "Revolution 1" does have its fans, "Revolution 9" is an outlandish experiment that is much more avant garde than it is rock and roll. Looking to experiment with his soon-to-be-wife Yoko Ono, Lennon devised a mini soundscape depicting his idea of revolution, including chaotic noise and random bits of dialogue being interspersed throughout the song.

Lennon and Ono had dabbled in this avant garde style before, but it feels much more suited to the couple's own pursuits than it does as a statement by the greatest band of all time. Paul McCartney was especially not fond of the results, leading to friction between him and Lennon that eventually resulted in the band fracturing at the end of the decade. McCartney has said since that the White Album was a fantastic record, but not pleasant to make, and this song probably has a lot to do with that.
