10 Songs That Broke Up Bands
2. Victim of Love - Eagles
The Eagles were fast becoming one of the biggest rock bands in the world by the mid '70s. After having 3 hit singles off of the album One of These Nights, Don Henley and Glenn Frey decided to hunker down to make sure their next record was the absolute best piece of work they had ever done. While Hotel California was absolute ear candy, the internal framework of the band was anything but sweet.
After years of just being a guitar player, Don Felder was determined to sing on the song "Victim of Love" for this album. Felder may have been adamant, but the rest of the band had other ideas. Though Felder did eventually lay down a vocal for the song in the studio, the band ended up convincing their manager to take Felder out to dinner while they recut the track with Henley singing lead.
No matter how comfortable you are in your own skin, the idea of going behind your back and re-recording a song wasn't something Felder took lightly. In the accompanying tour, the band faced one obstacle after another, leading bassist Randy Meisner to quit halfway through. The band were able to make it through one more record with The Long Run, but they finally ended after the friction between Felder and Frey became too much to bear after a benefit gig in Long Beach. The band could have been even bigger, but thanks to a few shady deals, "Victim of Love" became the domino piece that knocked everything else down.
