10 Songs That Don't Mean What You Think

3. My Sharona (The Knack)

What You Think It Means: The Knack's pop-infused groove has been a nightclub hit since it was released way back in 1979. When asked, most music fans would probably guess that the song is about vocalist Doug Fieger's love of his girlfriend Sharona. They'd be on the right lines, but there's a deeper, less well-known meaning to the famous song.

What It's Actually About: Fieger was 25 years old when he started obsessing over 17-year old Sharona Alperin. He'd met her at a show, and instantly became infatuated with the teenager to the point that she considered leaving her boyfriend. Then, one day, Sharona heard the song named after her and realised Doug's true feelings.

The whole thing is pretty awkward by 2019's standards, no doubt.

If a 25-year old pop star began wooing a teenage girl via his songwriting, there'd be questions asked. 'My Sharona' reveals Fieger's true feelings about being so lovesick for young girls with the words, "Always get it up for the touch of the younger kind".
