10 Songs That End On Cliffhangers
7. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
After writing songs about downtrodden losers on his first few records, Bruce Springsteen was determined to make a record with a shot of optimism. Upon release, Born to Run was one of the most soul-stirring releases of The Boss's career, kicking off with the glorious war cry of "Thunder Road."
Our story begins with our hero hearing a screen door slam and being greeted by his girlfriend Mary. These people seem to be almost hopeless in their everyday lives, waiting for someone to come sweep them off their feet into a better life. Until that inevitable day comes, Mary seems content to just roll over and wallow in her inner sorrow.
Instead of repeating the cycle once more, the singer is determined to dig his way out the hole he's been living in. On a whim, he rushes to Mary's house with his car, inviting her to run away with him to some place better than this burnt out town. With Mary climbing in, they're off to start afresh somewhere else.
We're not told if that place is better or worse than their current situation, but we at least know they're taking the gamble regardless. A fine example of how the best changes in life are the ones that you find within yourself.
