10 Songs That End On Cliffhangers
5. Into The Great Wide Open - Tom Petty
Tom Petty's music always seemed to capture the beating heart of rock and roll. From his beautiful working class portraits to his more hard rocking ragers, the man had an incredible knack for writing character pieces. It was only fitting that Petty would one day tell the typical story of a rocker in the big city.
After finishing high school, our hero Eddie ventures to Hollywood, where he gets his first tattoo and meets the love of his life. Eddie quickly finds success in the city, getting a record deal and making an album that gets in the charts almost immediately.
However, things start going south pretty quickly, with him getting fed up with the more extravagant lifestyle and his record label pushing him to write more commercial material. The music video even offers further developments, with him ranting at awards shows and left a shell of a man in his luxury pool. After these verses, the song comes to an abrupt stop, leaving Eddie's fate uncertain. He could be making his extravagant return to form, or he could be wallowing in his self-pity for the rest of his days. Much like the song's title, the ending of Eddie's story is left wide open for fan interpretation.
