10 Songs That End On Cliffhangers
4. Cygnus X-1 - Rush
All of Rush's tunes seem to be like mini sonic movies in your head. From the band's masterpiece with "2112" to more straightforward later stories like "Red Barchetta," each of Rush's lyrics seem like tiny vignettes of fantastic imagery. This is made even more captivating when they decide to cut the cord too early.
Coming at the end of their record A Farewell to Kings, "Cygnus X-1" tells the story of an astronaut journeying through space, looking for uncharted territories. Upon delving further into the galaxy, he comes across a massive pulling force only to discover a black hole blocking his path.
Determined to continue the course, the man takes his life into his own hands and steers his spaceship directly into the black hole's center. As his atoms start to split apart and his spaceship gets wrecked, the song suddenly comes to an ominous close, as if the black hole has completely overtaken him.
Though it would have been an ominous ending at that instance, the first track on the band's next album Hemispheres picks up exactly where this track left off, with the man exploring the cosmos further. Long before we had the Marvel end credits scenes, Rush were leaving fans anticipating their next releases with incredible ease.
