10 Songs That Get Better Every Time You Hear Them
4. Rooster - Alice in Chains
And speaking of songs that are overflowing with matters of death and despair...how about we throw it back to the grunge days? Yeah, even though this kind of music was being treated like the Second Coming of rock music, a lot of people tend to forget how crazy dark those early records from Pearl Jam and Soundgarden can be. If you want the real pitch black though, Alice in Chains has you covered on Rooster.
It's almost weird for a song like this to get better every time, considering it takes a hell of a while to get itself out of first gear the first time around. Hell, the heavy part of the tune doesn't fully drop until you're nearly a minute into the proper song. That's the point though, with the shimmery guitar building atmosphere as Layne Staley tells the story of this soldier walking tall and fending off death everywhere he goes.
When the chorus finally hits though, it's like someone kicking open the door of your mind, with the slamming guitars taking no prisoners as Staley sings about how our protagonist ain't going to die in the face of defeat. Although this crawl back to normal living isn't going to be very much fun, the power behind this song is able to transcend any kind of flannel fashion that it was associated with.
