10 Songs That Get Better Every Time You Hear Them

3. How Much a Dollar Cost - Kendrick Lamar

Of all the popular genres in the world, the hip hop scene always merits a bit of a second look every time you hear it. Especially if you're listening to the likes of Busta Rhymes, you can't help but spin the record again just to get a handle on what the hell he was saying. While some people earn their stripes on performance ability alone, the songs that stick with you are the ones that hit a bit closer to the bone.

Across To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar had already started to make something unprecedented, until How Much a Dollar Cost recontextualizes the entire thing for the fans. Framed as a narrative of a time when he was back in his hometown of Compton, Kendrick sees a homeless man on the streets and gets a bit of a moral lesson when he decides to not give him any money.

Though the flow of Kendrick's words isn't the most heavy hitting or anything, the way he pours over every syllable that comes out of his mouth is enough to sell you on the entire thing, from the way he approaches things like a conversation to how he turns it around into this emotional epiphany towards the end of the track. Even with half a decade in the bag since this record came out, How Much A Dollar Cost is still an experience for anyone who dares to throw it on.
