10 Songs That Got Their Own Sequels
5. Vermilion - Slipknot
As the nu metal stench started to get more and more pungent in the mid '00s, Slipknot needed to change fast to keep up with the times. Apart from making one of the heaviest offerings that the metal genre had ever seen with Iowa, Vol. III was a complete reinvention of their sound, putting more melodic sections into the mix and coming through with actual hooks. While Vermilion already had a poppier edge to the normal Slipknot affair, that was just hiding the sinister edge of....acoustic instruments.
Though they appear side by side on the album, Vermilion Pt. 2 could be considered the more sinister composition despite not changing too many of the lyrics. As a radio ready single, the song already killed, detailing the life of this mentally unstable person as they try to bring life to this object of their affection that isn't available to them. Then the acoustics come out...and we get to the real darkness.
Since all that's behind Corey Taylor's vocal is an acoustic guitar and a couple of backing tracks, the whole song feels bare and oddly real, like this is someone just reading their diary aloud before cracking up towards the end of the song. Even though acoustic is considered a nasty word in the world of metal, this is one of the few times where it actually pays to go unplugged.
