10 Songs That Got To Number One By Two Different Artists

7. Twist And Shout - Isley Brothers And The Beatles

Out of all the classics of the '60s, Twist and Shout feels like it's existed since the beginning of time. Given its dead simple arrangement and basic message about dancing the night away, how the hell is this not the first pop song ever written? Well, sometimes it just takes a few rock luminaries to remind us of how good a song like this can be.

Even though the Top Notes are originally responsible for this song, The Isley Brothers were the first to really capitalize on it, bringing the song to the top of the R&B Charts in the early '60s. But there were a few other rockers making some noise across the pond in Liverpool, making Twist and Shout a part of their setlist every night. By the time the Beatles actually got ahold of it, their version became one of the trademark songs of the British Invasion.

Taking the original's manic energy, you can hear John Lennon screaming his voice out towards the end of this song, almost like his vocal cords are about to fly out of his throat by the time the tape stops rolling. Even for all of the spotty moments on record, this is still one of the few innocent rock songs that has yet to wear out its welcome after half a century.
