10 Songs That Inspired Dance Crazes

7. PSY - Gangnam Style

There could not be a list of songs that have inspired dance trends without mentioning PSY’s international phenomenon, "Gangnam Style". Released in 2012 the video quickly became the most-viewed YouTube video of its time surpassing 2 billion views. Along with the entertaining big-budget video was the horse-like dance that soon became the norm in pop culture at the time.

"Gangnam Style" refers to a lifestyle of those living in the Gangnam district of Seoul, which is known for being hip, trendy and that of a higher class. Therefore the music video pokes fun at this culture with everything in the song, dance and music video being far from high class. The video does not take itself too seriously with PSY making fun of himself whilst also making fun of pop video cliches.

The Gangnam style dance and video provoked various parodies, memes, dances and tributes across the internet, each with a new take on the original hit. The song globalised South Korean music breaking YouTube records and can legitimately be called a cultural phenomenon.
