10 Songs That Saved Rock And Roll
1. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
When you think about the greatest songs in rock and roll, there are probably half of them that have been written by Bob Dylan. Before he had even reached his mid 20s, this humble folk rock singer was being heralded as the Voice of His Generation and had his songs picked apart as part of the youthful revolution. So when the Voice of a Generation decides to pivot, the public isn't going to take that lightly.
Opening with a snare hit that according to Springsteen "kicked down the down to your mind," Like a Rolling Stone was where the real counter culture of the '60s truly kicked into high gear. As much as this got brought up as a symbol for the revolution, there's actually a lot more going on here than just railing against politicians for leaving us disenfranchised.
This is Dylan looking back at us with his new electric guitar and reading us the riot act of what's going be happening in the coming years. As much as he may have enjoyed having people in his corner, this is where the rebel starts rebelling against the very thing he started, looking to find a way for himself that's outside of what everyone thinks he should do. Even 50 years later, any rock band should try and take a hint from what Dylan's saying here. You may get what you want, but you better get used to it.
