10 Songs That Were Painful To Make
4. Iowa - Slipknot
Most people don't need to worry about putting their body into too many dangerous situations when they're in the studio. After all, if you've practiced properly and have the artistic integrity to back up your music, then the songs should just record themselves, right?
While it's never really been that easy, Slipknot working with Ross Robinson on Iowa must have felt like going to war.
Across the recording of the entire album, the band have told horror stories about Robinson putting them through hell to get the correct takes, going so far as to throw potted plants at the band to make sure they played their hardest. There were even a few offhanded times when Robinson talked about getting a take out of Clown after throwing a lit candle across the room and having hot wax smeared on the drummer's face.
The biggest casualty, though, had to be at the expense of Corey Taylor, who recorded the title track of this album completely naked in the studio. The feeling ended up getting so strong in the room that Taylor became too animalistic for his own good, breaking glass around him and cutting himself up before vomiting his guts out after the take was finished.
As much as Slipknot's aesthetic has been known to be more on the creepy side, this was past the point of no return for more than a few people.
