10 Songs The Artists HATED Recording

9. Smoke On the Water - Deep Purple

Deep Purple really had the odds stacked against them when going to work on their album Machine Head. Looking to ditch the confines of the studio environment, the band wanted to set up shop in the Montreux Casino, only to have it burn down before they could actually make it to their recording dates.

There was a silver lining by giving the rock world "Smoke on the Water," but even getting that down proved to be arduous.

After attempting to work out of the Rolling Stones mobile studio, Ritchie Blackmore's simplistic riff ended up being the launch pad for "Water," which would tell the story of the band's recording misadventures.

Everything seemed to be working itself out, but the Montreux public was having none of it. Unbeknownst to the band, the sheer volume of their instruments were keeping the entire town awake as they were recording that night.

By the time they got around to doing the final take that you hear today, the police had shown up and were banging on the door of the mobile studio, with the bands roadies holding the doors shut while the band laid everything down. It's almost a shame when you think about it.

If those noble policemen were able to actually shut down recording, "Smoke on the Water" would have never been made, and perhaps a million guitar store employees would have been spared their sanity.
