10 Songs The Artists HATED Recording

4. Rearviewmirror - Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam had really hit their stride when it came time to cut the songs for their second LP Vs. Though Eddie Vedder was a little wary about the band's bigger budget, they had worked their way up to rockstar status and were finally able to make the aggressive record they always wanted to make. Hard rock may have served them well in those days, but there's a difference between aggressive music and just raw aggression.

Showcasing a more democratic writing process, "Rearviewmirror" was written solely by Eddie Vedder, who ended up torturing drummer Dave Abbruzzese when cutting the song. The composition isn't all that complicated on the surface, but when it came time to lay down the rhythm tracks, PJ's new drummer was not able to lock in as well as he did on other classics like "Dissident" or "Animal."

Rather than edit out the more frustrating sessions, the tension is palpable on the final track, where you hear Abbruzzese almost admit defeat at the end of the song as he throws his sticks against the wall. "Rearviewmirror" might not be the most demanding song to perform or anything, but once you put the band in a studio, this track ended up becoming the moment where all the tension finally boiled over.
