5. Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtsmuVA0m7c Elvis took this song from a commercial failure to a global success, being just pipped at the post in the UK. With such a lengthy and respected career, Elvis has had his fair share of number singles in the UK. But when some of his lessor remembered songs like Wooden Heart and Crying In The Chapel made it to the top, it's hard to imagine why Suspicious Minds didn't. The song has stood the test of time and is up there with Jailhouse Rock in terms of recognisable Elvis tracks. The opening riff of Suspicious Minds is so striking and Presley's vocals have incredible gravitas on this brilliant track. Elvis is a legend in the industry and has enough number ones to make any artist bright green with envy. Not only in the UK, but globally and of course on multiple charts in the US as well. Just have a listen for yourself if you are in the minority and haven't heard Suspicious Minds, you'll understand why it has number 1 written all over it. Rolling Stone loved this tune, so much so it land at number 91 on their chart of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. UK listeners did take Suspicious Minds to number 1, but many years later in 2002 Gareth Gates and Will Young had a two week streak at the top with the song. So the listening public somewhat redeemed themselves, thank God.
